I am going into my 9th year of teaching at Adamson Middle School; I am Certified and Highly Qualified in Middle School Science and Middle School Social Studies.  I received my Bachelors Degree from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where I was a member of the Dean's list, President of the History Club, and Mr. Stillman of my senior class. I obtained my Masters Degree from Capella University. I enjoy family, and sports.

This year I will be teaching 8th Grade Physical Science and 8th Grade Georgia History. I look forward to a successful year working with you and your child as we strive towards mastery of the Common Core and passing the spring assessments (Georgia Milestones). The middle school physical science course is designed to give students the necessary skills for a smooth transition from elementary physical science standards to high school physical science standards. In 8th grade social studies (Georgia history), the course is organized into four strands: geography, history, economics, and government/civics.

Welcome to Mr. Crowell's social studies class for the 2016-2017 school year. Your child will be studying Georgia History this year. In sixth grade students studied Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Seventh grade students studied Africa, the Middle East (Southwest Asia), South, and East Asia. In eighth grade we will return to North America and study Georgia and parts of US history related to the state. With the end of the CRCT and the introduction of the Georgia Milestones test this year, your child will be doing more reading, critical thinking , and writing in social studies class than before. Your child is responsible for all assigned work, as they prepare to go to high school next year.

After school assistance will be Tuesdays from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. with prior arrangements discussed with Mr. Crowell.

Course Name: 8th Grade Physical Science

Special Materials: Composition notebook, paper, pens (blue or black), pencils, ruler, colored pencils, markers, double sided tape, highlight, and calculator

Course Description/Learning Targets: The middle school physical science course is designed to give students the necessary skills for a smooth transition from elementary physical science standards to high school physical science standards. The purpose is to give all students an overview of common strands in physical science including, but not limited to, the nature of matter, laws of energy, matter, motion and forces, and energy transformation. This curriculum is NOT intended in any way to take the place of the high school physical science curriculum.

Georgia Performance Standards:

S8P1. Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter.

S8P2. Students will be familiar with the forms and transformations of energy.

S8P3. Students will investigate relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects.

S8P4. Students will explore the wave nature of sound and electromagnetic radiation.

S8P5. Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature.

Special Assignments and Projects:

There will be several special assignments given throughout the year. Science Fair is due mid- November, preparation outside of the classroom is expected. Access to a computer and the Internet will be an advantage.

Classroom rules and Discipline Procedures: Students will be expected to follow all school rules and school discipline policies outlined in the student handbook. In addition the following rules will apply in the classroom:

1. Be prepared…your materials and your attitude.

2. Be prompt…to class and with your work.

3. Be respectful…of others, yourself, property and of time.

4. Be honest…copying others’ work does not help you learn.

Makeup Policy:  Students will be allowed to make up missed work.  Students will have two days from the date of the missed absence to complete and turn in missed work to teacher. Missed lab experiments will be made up under the teacher’s supervision. The teacher reserves the right to substitute or modify assignments missed by students.
